Can i take sue my vet?

ok so my mother in law was looking after my cat for me, and apparently she got hurt and was taken to the vet and put down i didn't find out until about 8 weeks later, my cat has been going to that vet for 5 yrs and is micro chipped and registered to me and my last name is different to my mother in laws, the vet didn't check her micro chip or verify ownership and she was put down without my consent of knowledge i would have liked to get her cremated but obviously it's to late now, i have proof in form of a receipt that she was put down there do you think i have any grounds for legal action?
