Could you really tell who was being cremated by the colour of the smoke at Auschwitz, as this survivor said?

I could almost understand the smoke being different colours for fat people against skinny people because the fat could potentially change the smoke colour. But nationalities? Whilst I accept that different people might have slightly different trace chemicals depending on where they were born to be able to translate that into a visible change in smoke colour stretches the bounds of possibility to me.
